Design of new systems for oculad drug delivery of bioactive natural products

Abstract

Chronic eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are major contributors to vision loss in the elderly population. Although there are several drugs to manage these pathologies, however there are still unsolved problems related to their administration: i) the time the active molecule remains in the eye, ii) its delivery to the site of action.
The success of any topical ophthalmic therapy depends on good corneal penetration and retention at the site of action; nowadays these are hot topics in the search of improve drugs delivery and effectiveness. In this context, this project is aimed to achieve new platforms based on nanoparticles, and in situ gelling systems to study the stability and effectiveness of natural products on ocular diseases
