Natural compound-based surface modification of a potential implant for controlled drug delivery

Research Topic
Abstract

The aim of this master’s thesis is to develop and characterize a modified implant surface with potential application as a controlled drug delivery system. The surface of the selected implant material will be modified using natural compounds in order to improve its ability to interact with and immobilize biologically active substances. Particular attention will be focused on the sorption of an antibiotic onto the modified surface, with the aim of evaluating the potential of the developed material for local drug delivery.

The influence of surface modification on the physicochemical and morphological properties of the material will be investigated using complementary analytical techniques. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) will be used to evaluate changes in surface morphology, while energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) will provide information on the elemental composition of the material. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) will be applied to identify functional groups and confirm the presence of compounds introduced during the modification process.

The obtained results will enable the assessment of the effectiveness of the proposed surface modification and its influence on antibiotic sorption. The study is expected to provide insight into the potential use of naturally derived compounds in the development of implantable materials capable of controlled local drug delivery.
