The role of Lithium ions in neurodegenerative diseases

Research theses
Abstract

Recent findings reveal physiological effects of endogenous Li in the brain and indicate that disruption of Li homeostasis may be an early event in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. In this perspective, the interaction between lithium ions and specific biomolecules involved in neurodegeneration will be investigated by a coupled surface plasmon resonance and mass spectrometric approach.
